Certification is a term containing many different realities. There are certifications of legality, traceability, sustainable forest management certifications. 

What is certification of legality and traceability?
Some years ago, verification companies such as SGS, Veritas and Smartwood... launched various products on the markets (notably in the Congo Basin and in West Africa) such as OLB (Timber origin and legality), TLTV ( Timber legality & traceability verification), Smartstep (long-term approach towards the commitment of sustainable forest management certification)…

All these are certifications ensuring that the company respects the actual legislation, the forestry code, social regulations and tax laws. 

Companies respecting legality have indeed no other possibility to provide markets with proof of their legal approaches. 

The countries do not always have the credibility needed in order to provide that proof. Respecting legality and traceability is the first step towards sustainable management..
